The Story Behind Desert Sunrise

There are certain moments in life that you don’t realize are becoming memories
while you’re living them.

For years, my mornings all looked about the same: coffee in one hand, keys in the other, heading out the front door while most of Albuquerque was still asleep. Before I got in the truck, I’d almost always do the same thing: I’d look east, right toward the Sandia Mountains. It wasn’t something I planned; it just became part of my routine.

Some mornings, the mountains were hidden behind clouds. Other mornings they’d glow
with shades of pink, orange, and gold that almost didn’t seem real. The sun would slowly work its way over the mountains, and for just a few moments, everything felt… still.

No traffic.
No phone calls.
No emails.

Just another New Mexico morning, getting ready to begin.

I never stood there very long; most mornings, I had somewhere to be, and work wasn’t going to wait because I wanted to admire the sunrise. But I’d always steal a few seconds before getting in the truck. Looking back now, I think those few seconds became something I looked forward to without ever realizing it.

More Than Just Albuquerque

It wasn’t just Albuquerque, either. Over the years, I’ve camped all over New Mexico, from Elephant Butte to Heron Lake, from the mountains in the north to the deserts in the south. I’ve watched the sunrise through tall pine trees, and I’ve watched it stretch across a wide-open desert where you can see for miles.

Different campsites, different landscapes, different mornings. But somehow, the feeling was always the same: the air was cool, the world was quiet, and for a little while, it felt like the entire state was taking one deep breath before another day began.

While I was writing this article, I started scrolling back through the photos on my phone. I figured I’d find one or two sunrise pictures. Instead, I found years of them—the Sandias before work, Elephant Butte, Heron Lake, camping trips I hadn’t thought about in years.

Different dates, different places, yet somehow I kept stopping to photograph another sunrise. I don't think I even realized I was doing it at the time. Looking back now, maybe I wasn’t trying to remember the sunrise; maybe I was trying to remember how it made me feel.

I’ve seen a lot of beautiful places over the years, but there’s just something about a New Mexico sunrise. It doesn’t matter if you’re standing in Albuquerque, beside a quiet lake, deep in the mountains, or out in the middle of the desert. When that first light starts creeping across the landscape, everything changes:

"The cold air begins to warm. The birds wake up. The colors slowly come alive. For a few minutes, the world feels a little slower, a little quieter, a little simpler. It feels like home."

Trying to Bottle a Sunrise

Years later, when I started creating scents for High Desert Grooming Co., I found myself thinking about those mornings—not once, not twice, but over and over again. I wasn’t trying to make another citrus fragrance, nor was I trying to copy someone else’s cologne.

I kept asking myself one question:

If you could bottle a New Mexico sunrise… what would it smell like?

Not what it looks like, anyone can take a picture. I wanted to capture something
a camera never could:

The crisp morning air before the desert starts warming up.
The warmth of the first sunlight touching your face.
The peaceful feeling of standing outside before the rest of the world wakes up.

That became the challenge.

Chasing a Feeling

That’s when the experimenting really began. I wasn’t chasing ingredients; I was
chasing a memory.

I wanted something bright without smelling like candy.
Warm without feeling heavy.
Fresh without smelling like soap.

It sounded simple. It wasn’t.

There were nights I’d spend hours at my workbench making tiny adjustments to a blend, convinced I finally had it. Then I’d come back the next day, smell it again, and immediately think, “Nope. Back to the drawing board.” Some blends smelled good, but they didn’t feel right. Some never made it past my workbench, while others came close, but every time I smelled them, something was missing. That’s the frustrating part about creating something from scratch: Sometimes you know exactly what you’re trying to create, you just haven’t figured out how to get there yet.

Then one evening, something changed. I stopped trying to create a fragrance, and
I started trying to recreate a feeling. That’s when Desert Sunrise finally
came together.

More Than a Beard Products

People sometimes ask me what Desert Sunrise smells like. I could tell you about
sweet orange, vanilla, warm amber, and every other ingredient that went into
building it. But honestly... I think that misses the point.

To me, Desert Sunrise isn’t really about fragrance notes. It’s about those
mornings:

Walking out the front door before work and taking a few seconds to appreciate something, I eventually realized I'd been taking for granted.
Waking up in a tent somewhere in New Mexico, unzipping the door, stepping outside with a cup of coffee, and watching another day begin.
Slowing down, even if only for a minute.

That's what Desert Sunrise means to me. I tried to make something that reminded me of home. Maybe when you smell it, you’ll picture something completely different, and maybe that’s the best part. The same sunrise can mean something different to everyone who sees it.
