The Truth About Beard Oil: What I Wish I’d Known Years Ago

By Martin Molina

When I started High Desert Grooming Co., I made myself one promise: if I was going to write, I was going to be honest.

This isn’t going to be one of those blogs where every article ends with, “Buy my product.” There are already enough websites doing that.

Instead, I want this to be a place where I share what I’ve learned while growing a beard and building High Desert Grooming Co. from the ground up here in New Mexico: the mistakes, the wins, the expensive lessons, and everything in between.

I’m not a barber, and I’m not a dermatologist.

I’m just a guy who spent years trying to grow a beard without understanding why I kept giving up.

Looking back, the answer was a lot simpler than I ever imagined.

The Three-Week Wall

Every time I decided I was finally going to grow my beard, the same thing happened.

The first week was easy.

The second week wasn’t bad.

Then, somewhere around the third week, everything changed.

The itching started.

Not just a little itch, either. I’m talking about the kind where you keep clawing at your face without thinking about it, which is a dangerous game when your fingers smell like roasted green chile.

Eventually, I’d look in the mirror and think, “Maybe I’m just not meant to have a beard.”

So I’d shave it off.

A few months would go by, I’d get motivated again, and I’d repeat the whole process.

For years, I blamed my beard.

Turns out, my beard wasn’t the problem.

My skin was.

Nobody Ever Told Me That

Like a lot of guys, my beard strategy was simple: toss the razor and wait for the inner Viking to show up.

That was the entire plan.

Nobody ever explained that the skin underneath your beard needs just as much love as the beard itself.

As your beard grows, it acts like a sponge, pulling away the natural oils your skin depends on. Throw in hot showers, harsh soaps, and our bone-dry New Mexico air, and your face never stood a chance.

That’s where the itch comes from.

That’s where “beardruff” comes from.

And that’s why so many guys give up before they ever enjoy having a beard.

My First Experience With Beard Oil

The first time I heard about beard oil was on YouTube.

Like most beginners, I figured, “How hard can this be?”

Turns out… hard.

I assumed if a few drops were good, half the bottle had to be even better.

I was wrong. My beard looked like I’d gone bobbing for apples in a deep fryer.

Then something changed.

After about fifteen years of cutting my own hair, I finally decided to go to a real barber. I got a fresh fade, a proper beard trim, and experienced the whole hot towel treatment for the first time.

When he reached for the beard oil, I locked in.

He used… a few drops.

I remember thinking, “That’s it? Where’s the rest of it?”

So I asked him how much beard oil you were actually supposed to use.

That simple question changed everything.

He explained that beard oil isn’t meant to drown your beard. Its real job is to nourish the skin underneath it.

That was the first time anyone had explained it to me that way.

Once I started using the right amount, and eventually switched to better-quality ingredients, the difference was night and day.

The itching stopped.

The flakes ghost.

My beard actually felt healthy.

And for the first time, I made it past that third week without reaching for the razor.

Why I Built My Own Formula

Years later, when I decided to start High Desert Grooming Co., I kept thinking back to that conversation in the barber chair.

I didn’t want to make the cheapest beard oil on the market, and I definitely didn’t want to slap my logo on someone else’s pre-made formula and call it my own.

I wanted to make the beard oil I wish someone had handed me back when I was struggling through week three.

I also wanted this company to feel like home. New Mexico isn’t just where I live, it’s built into the DNA of this brand.

That’s why prickly pear seed oil is in the formula. It’s not just in there as a desert gimmick; it genuinely does wonders for your skin, and keeps the brand rooted right here.

Every other ingredient had to earn its spot.

Jojoba oil mimics your skin’s natural oils better than almost anything else.

Argan oil to soften up coarse beard hair.

Meadowfoam seed oil to lock in moisture, which is non-negotiable in our dry-as-a-bone climate.

Squalane so it absorbs fast without leaving your face feeling like a deep fryer.

Abyssinian oil to smooth things out and make combing easy.

I could have made a simpler formula.

I definitely could’ve made a cheaper one.

I even formulate every scent from scratch. Sometimes I'll spend an entire evening making tiny adjustments to a blend, only to decide it still isn't right. Some scents never make it past my workbench, and that's ok. I'd rather start over than put my name on something I'm not proud of. I wasn’t interested in pouring pre-made fragrance oil into a batch and calling it unique. I wanted every scent to tell a story.

At the end of the day, I just wanted to build something I’d be proud to use on my own face every single day.

What Beard Oil Can—and Can’t—Do

One thing I’ll never do is lie to you about what a beard oil can do.

It won’t rewrite your genetics. It won’t magically fill in patchy spots overnight, and it won’t turn you into a mountain man by next weekend.

What beard oil can do is create a healthy environment for the beard you have. It helps reduce itch, minimizes flakes caused by dry skin, and keeps your skin hydrated.

And honestly? Sometimes that’s all it takes to finally stick with growing one.

Looking Ahead

This is the first entry in what I hope becomes a long-running journal.

Some articles will be about beard care.

Some will be about product development.

Some will definitely be about the mistakes I’ve made while building this company, because trust me, there have been plenty.

If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror debating whether to shave because your face won't stop itching, I hope you’ll give it another week.

I wish someone had explained all of this to me years ago. Maybe this article can be the conversation I wish someone had with me years ago.

Thanks for reading the very first entry in The High Desert Journal.

I appreciate you spending a few minutes with me, and I hope you'll come back for the next one.

Until then ...

Stay rugged. Stay refined.

P.S. If there’s a beard topic you’d like me to cover in a future journal entry, send me a message. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll do the research and learn right alongside you.
